Family Nymphalidae

This large group of generally fast flying butterflies can be found at nearly all altitudes throughout Papua New Guinea. The exceptions are the Amathusids (Owl) and Euploea butterflies which are slow flying inhabitants of the rainforest. Many of the Nymphalids feed on rotten fermented fruits and some on animal droppings. Some of the represented genera include Apaturina, Charaxes, Cethosia, Taenaris, Euploea and Vindula.

Good reference books include "Butterflies of the Australasian Region" by B. D ABrera and "Butterflies of Papua New Guinea" by M. Parsons. There are many other less expensive volumes that cover some, but now where near all of the PNG species.
