The following photographic story board will give you a brief introduction to the work done at the Insect Farming and Trading Agency.

	The IFTA office building situated in Bulolo, Morobe Province, Papua New Guinea.
	Several greenhouses have been set up to breed different kinds of butterflies - and the food plants of their caterpillars.
	The breeding cages are used to keep the caterpillars apart from their natural enemies - birds, mice, lizards or parasites - until the caterpillars change into pupae which can easily be collected.
	A member of staff in IFTA's demonstration farm of the birdwing food plant - Aristolochia tagala together with an Ornithoptera priamus caterpillar and butterfly. This butterfly is easy to farm - many hundreds of butterflies and pupae are bought each year from butterfly farmers throughout Papua New Guinea.
	Ornithoptera priamus is one of PNG's most common birdwings. This photo shows a couple in courtship - the green male flying above the black and white female that is sitting on a leaf.
	The eggs of Taenaris artemis are white when laid but soon turn pink in colour. The caterpillars hatch after about 10 days.
	The caterpillar of Troides oblongomaculatus only feeds on the poisonous vine Aristolochia tagala. By storing the poison in its body the caterpillar is distasteful to birds and other predators.
	This caterpillar of Papilio aegeus has attached itself to a stem and is about to pupate.
	The pupa of Papilio aegeus can either be brown or green in colour - dependant on the color of its background.
	A male of Ornithoptera priamus that has just emerged from its pupa.
	At IFTA's purchase section all incoming insects from farmers and collectors from throughout PNG are sorted and labeled until they are sold to entomologists, museums, art dealers and collectors all over the world.
